COLUMBUS COUNTY, NC (WWAY) -- A suspected drug dealer is behind bars after law enforcement carried out raids on his businesses and home.

After a three-month investigation by the Columbus County Sheriff's Office, the SBI and Chadbourn Police, officers raided Harold's Body Shop in Chadbourn and arrested its owner on a variety of cocaine related charges.

The raid came after multiple complaints from Chadbourn residents that there was suspicious activity at the body shop.

Columbus County Sheriff Chris Batten says that after being tipped off, undercover narcotics agents bought cocaine from the business.

Deputies arrested owner Larry McKenzie and charged him with five counts of possession, trafficking, and maintaining a business with the purpose to sell cocaine.

"He was a major player," Sheriff Batten said. "There were several buys made from here that amounted up to several grams of cocaine, and it wound up showing us that he was a significant player in not only Chadbourn Police Department's problem but in our county problem. "

Bladen County Sheriff's deputies also helped execute a search warrant at McKenzie's home in Bladenboro.

Batten says evidence found during the raid could help them arrest several more people in the local cocaine trade.

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WWAY) -- The past of two Bladen County men found them squaring off behind bars yesterday.

Eric Bennett, 27, was arrested and charged with attempted murder back in February. Yesterday one of his alleged victims wound up in his jail cell.

Bladen County Sheriff's spokesman Capt. Rodney Hester says the jailer was not aware of the history between Bennett and Shawn Melvin, 39, and had no idea things would get so violent.

Deputies arrested Melvin yesterday for failure to appear in court, failure to pay child support and driving with a revoked license.

The jailer said when he put Melvin in the cell, Melvin attacked Bennett.

Capt. Hester says they asked Melvin when he was book if had any problems with any of the other inmates.

"Elizabethtown Police Department investigated the original case back in February," Hester said. "Mr. Melvin was asked if he had anyone in the jail that he would not want to be in the same cell with, and he answered no to that question."

Bennett was taken to the hospital, where was treated for a laceration on his head from the fight.

Melvin is charged with assault. Hester says he bonded out of jail.

FIRST ON 3: Woman hangs herself in Bladen Co. Jail; inmates complain of conditions

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WWAY) -- The Bladen County Sheriff says a woman is dead after she hanged herself in jail just hours after a judge denied her request for a lower bond.

Linda Hester Edwards, 44, attempted suicide at the Bladen County Jail Monday. She was taken to New Hanover Regional Medical Center, where she died this morning.

Edwards appeared in court Monday to answer to felony charges of larceny and possession of stolen goods. Court records show she was accused of stealing more than $15,000 worth of jewelry. The clerk's office says Edwards's attorney requested her $100,000 bond be reduced, but the motion was denied.

Bladen County Sheriff Prentis Benston says he can only remember one other death at the jail since he took office in 2010. He says that case resulted in a lawsuit the county settled.

The sheriff said he did not have time for an interview with us. However, inmates had plenty to say about the conditions of the jail.

While WWAY was outside the jail, inmates yelled through the windows about bad conditions inside.

"They got inspectors and mold all over the walls in here, and the people be in here sick, throwing up, and they will not come and check on us," one inmate said. "You have to tell them that you're either dying or going to commit suicide for them to come back and check on you."

And several inmates said they need to see doctors, but cannot.

"I've been trying to see the doctor for four and a half months, but they will not let me see the doctor," one man yelled. "I got a hernia."

Inmates say when they have a problem, their complaints fall on deaf ears

"Every time we write a grievance for them, they take it and throw it away," another inmate said.

District Attorney Jon David says the SBI is investigating, which he says is common procedure when an inmate dies in custody. He says the county is looking into building a new jail.

Bladen County leaders won't talk about issues inside jail

BLADEN COUNTY, NC (WWAY) -- Ever since Linda Edwards, 44, hanged herself in the Bladen County Jail last week, we've heard several reports of poor conditions inside the jail. So today WWAY went back to Bladen County looking for answers.

"You have no moving space, no nothing like that," former jail inmate Robert Dicicco said. "I mean it's just, like I said, it's just cramped up."

Dicicco says he has been held in the Bladen County Jail a few times. He says the old jail needs an upgrade.

Michael Monroe agrees. He says his friend was just in the jail and told him about the conditions inside.

"They told me about the shower being broken for over two weeks," Monroe said. "The shower has not been fixed yet, as we have heard. And, you know, the conditions are terrible in there."

We tried to talk with the County Manager Greg Martin, who referred us to Sheriff Prentis Benston. We also tried speaking with the sheriff a number of times, but he told us the county attorney advised him not to talk with us, so we decided to talk with County Attorney Leslie Johnson, but said he did not have time for an interview today.

However while we were outside the jail, inmates once again had plenty to say about the conditions inside.

"You got inmates in here sick," one inmate said through a window. "You can't get no attention with the doctor or nothing. The shower has been broken for 2 weeks."

He says there is mold and asbestos in the jail. But he says when they express their concerns, their complaints fall on deaf ears.

"Every time we write y'all, they throw our mail away," the man said. "Whenever we write grievances, they throw our mail away. They don't care."

The county attorney asked us to e-mail our questions about the jail, which we already did Thursday and never heard back. We have sent another e-mail to the county attorney to discuss conditions in the jail. We are still waiting to hear back.
